Safe food for India; Sustainable livelihood for Farmers. Incorporate our demands into your party manifesto

I am a mother and a farmer. I cultivate 1.2 acres of land in Sunderbans in West Bengal, and from this small plot of land, attempt to feed my family and earn a livelihood. Farmers like me have taken the responsibility of feeding the nation.

Disturbingly, the Government doesn’t seem to care if I am getting enough income or not. Instead they are saying that I should learn to produce more regardless of the cost. It appears that they are determined to push people like myself out of farming.

To make matters worse, the government is also taking away our basic resources like land from us in order to support industries of various kinds. They want to hand over farming in this country to big multinational corporations. They use risky practices like excessive use of fertilisers and pesticides and technologies like Genetically Modified (GM) seeds.

These technologies are unsustainable as they deplete our resources and bad for our health. As a farmer I know this is not correct. We won’t be able to provide safe, nutritious and diverse food to the people. Nor can we let our resources degrade. Healthy farms lead to a healthy nation.

We need to remind our politicians to put food and farmers on their agenda. Thousands of farmers and experts have come together to create a Charter Of Demands that is aimed at making India’s farming secure and sustainable. This is a necessary step to ensure that we grow enough food to feed our nation.

Elections are round the corner. This is a good time to ask our political parties to take a stand to ensure safe food for India. Join me in asking them accept the charter of demands.

Sign my petition asking the leaders of the major political parties of India to listen to the voice of the safe food and farming in India and incorporate our demands into their manifesto.
