Aug 1, 2019 — Dear Petitioner
Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about XXL London.
London’s LGBTQ+ venues make a vital contribution to London’s cultural life. We are doing all we can at City Hall to support them. The Night Czar, Amy Lamé, set up the LGBTQ+ Venues Forum to help build resilience amongst venues. The Night Czar has also worked with the Mayor's Culture at Risk Office to protect over 200 night-time venues at risk of closure, including almost 30 LGBTQ+ venues. The Mayor has launched London's first Cultural Infrastructure Plan which includes a map of every LBGTQ+ venue in London and shows that the number of venues has remained stable for the last two years, following a 62% decline over the past decade.
The XXL events that take place at Pulse nightclub are a crucial part of London’s LGBTQ+ landscape. The Night Czar and the Culture at Risk Office have been working with the venue’s owners for two years to challenge a planning decision made by the previous Mayor and secure the club’s future. This has included exploring options for new premises, lobbying the council and offering support and advice to the team that run XXL. The Night Czar and Southwark Council recently held urgent meetings with XXL’s owners to find a way forward.
