Laughing gas canister litter is a huge issue in Redbridge. They are pretty much all over the place and there is very little currently being done to combat this issue.

The issue with these canisters goes well beyond them simply looking unpleasant. Every year the number of fatalities caused by illegal recreational use of laughing gas increases. The litter caused by these canisters can also pose as a potential hazard to public safety and that is what our GCSE Citizenship action has been working to reduce.

We conducted research on how aware the public was of the canisters and how they affected local citizen's daily lives. 100% recognised the canisters but only 45% of the participants knew what they were called and used for. Some participants complained that their personal belongings had been damaged by the canisters e.g. bike and car tyre punctures.

Our proposed solution is for the council to put a system into place where people who dump laughing gas in public spaces are required to perform a month’s worth of community service, cleaning up laughing gas canister waste. This way they are cleaning their own mess in away and we hope this will prevent them from being so careless in the future. This approach can teach people to be responsible for their actions in the way that £80 fine may not.

Although it may be controversial, placing cameras in areas where canisters are regularly dumped could be a big help in identifying litterers. Cameras would need to be strategically placed so people's homes are not shown, only roads and streets.
