Increase funding to zoos by 50% and update laws regarding animal enclosure sizes.
We want the Government to increase funding for Government owned zoos by at least 50%, work closely with, and support, animal charities and nonprofit zoos such as the ZSL, and update laws regarding enclosure sizes for all animals.
We strongly believe that this would be beneficial as currently, zoos are not at a good enough standard for animals to thrive or be used for conservation breeding. For example, only 3% of zoos are believed to meet ethical standards. As a result, its important we increase the enclosure size requirements as it would ensure that animals are living the most stress free lives and have a more appropriate amount of space to carry out the same type of activities their species would in the wild.
An increase of funding and more support from the Government would allow more money to be spent on the expansion of animal enclosures and better animal veterinary care. Consequently, this would mean that the breeding of animals for conservation methods would be more effective and animals live in enclosures that replicate their natural habitats a lot more.
