Being born and bred in Newham and now working in Newham for almost 20 years, I have seen the increase in parking restrictions around the borough. I work with disaffected teenagers referred from mainstream education, supporting them in making positive choices for their future. I and others find it increasingly difficult to find and pay for parking as part of the job involves travelling around the borough to either other schools, youth offending team offices, Building 100, social care team offices, police stations and often Newham General Hospital and other health care services linked to our jobs, sometimes with students or going to meetings on behalf of students, and everywhere there are parking restrictions in place. We are not allowed free parking, and considering we have been on a pay freeze for almost five years, given a 1% pay increase, backdated a couple months, how and where are we expected to have the extra pounds to pay for the parking to do our jobs effectively? Youth Offending Office, Cumberland Rd is nowhere near a train station and now has parking restrictions in place. I drove around for twenty minutes with student trying to find parking at social care at 5 Beckton Rd. Being based in North Woolwich, recent parking restrictions there now have caused our local bakers to close and considering our school has no canteen, students and staff were dependent on that to pop in for something fresh to eat. Small businesses are being hit hard due to limited parking in Newham generally. Accompanying students to hospital due to injuries, attending important meetings on their behalf, and returning to work promptly to do our job is being affected greatly.
I propose some of these restrictions be reviewed and removed to support not only us in education but also us that have to attend for blood tests, as now Appleby Rd Medical Centre has parking restrictions outside. These services are vital to local people and we are being got at on every turning, and corner in Newham, one of the most deprived boroughs in England. Come on some of Labour councillors, come and visit my school and follow us for a week in our shoes and see how the parking affects us daily, as it's really not fair. I and others value our roles in improving the progression of the young people and residents in Newham and this is something you can easily address. You should do a survey of all the education, NHS and social care workers in the borough and you will be hearing us voicing the same thoughts!
