GOVERNMENT OF MALAWI TO CONSIDER IT’S STANCE ON THE PALESTINIAN CRISIS AND ISRAEL

RE: REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT OF MALAWI TO CONSIDER IT’S STANCE ON THE PALESTINIAN CRISIS
We, the Palestine Solidarity Movement here in Malawi, write to bring to your attention our concerns regarding Malawi’s position on the following:
1. Areas of Concern
(a) Embassy in Jerusalem
We note with concern and regret that Malawi plans to establish an Embassy in Jerusalem totally contrary and in violation of the resolution declared by the United Nation General Assembly on 21st December 2017 pronouncing the status of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital as being “Null and Void”.
(b) Vote in Un Against UNHRC Investigation
We also note with great dismay and disappointment that Malawi voted against the investigation by The United Nations Human Rights Council on atrocities and war crimes committed by Israel in GAZA where rights of people have been grossly debased and lives of innocent civilians, particularly children have been lost.
(c) AU Observer Status Granted to Israel
We note with concern Malawi’s passivity on the African Union’s move to grant observer status to Israel instead of rejecting the move like our neighbor countries have done.
Failure to object to this position by Malawi’s government leaves a lot to be desired about Malawi’s commitment to the aims and objectives of the African Union.
2. Recommendations
Looking at the gravity of the concerns, we urge the Government of Malawi to consider our undermentioned recommendations seriously:
i. To rescind the decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem as this defies international law.
ii. To uphold the values of human rights and freedoms by supporting the investigation of Israel’s act of violating human rights, brutal killings of innocent civilians in GAZA established by the United Nations Human Rights Council.
iii. To refrain from supporting Israel’s observer status in the African Union considering the rejection of such application in the past on legal and moral grounds.
