Native American students should not be penalized for speaking their native language.

Tell Sacred Heart School in Wisconsin that "Ketapanen" is NOT a four-letter word; it means "I love you."

Miranda Washinawatok is a 12-year-old Menominee student. She was teaching a classmate how to say some words in her native language recently, and her teacher overheard her. According to Native News Network, Miranda's teacher slammed her hand on the desk, angry that Miranda might have said something "bad." As punishment, Miranda was benched during her team's next basketball game.

In a nation that is based on diversity, each state has students speaking their native languages, has festivals celebrating native foods and traditions, offers ballots and other government documents printed in multiple languages. How can we not allow native speakers the same respect?
