The response to COVID-19 and the current omicron variant surge in cases by our government is clearly unfortunate. Students in public schools are still subjected to in-person classes, with children as young as five years old, barely vaccinated, still having to attend school despite the rise of infection rates. The omicron variant of the coronavirus has been showed to be highly transmissible and have an increased risk of infection in populations of 0-18 years old, something new compared to the prior variants. There also is emerging data showing long-term detrimental effects of COVID-19 including heart failure resulting from myocarditis. It is of utmost importance to ensure no child is susceptible to the virus- it can cost them their life, even if it's fifty years in the future. This petition calls for the SCUSD to shut down in-person activities and curriculars and shift class online to promote general welfare of students' health. Thank you.
