South African women played a crucial role fighting apartheid. Some of these heroines, mostly unsung, kept the liberation struggle fire burning when their spouses were incarcerated.
Very few women leaders have received public acclaim with fewer public spaces named after them for the sacrifices they made, irrespective of political affiliations.
It is time South Africans put their political differences aside and recognize the historical role played by Mama Winnie Mandela for her tenacity, and fortitude for the immeasurable sacrifices and contribution made - especially when most of our political leadership were exiled or incarcerated and even murdered.
During her funeral service, EFF president Julius Malema proposed that Cape Town International airport be renamed after Winnine Mandela.
As we shape our history, and in advance of a common nationhood, this is a proposal worthy of support by everyone.
