Undocumented / AB540 Resource Center

Petition Summary and Background:

Every year, 65,000 undocumented students graduate from U.S. high schools, and only 5-10% of these graduates go onto higher education. California is home to 38,000 of these students.

34,000 enroll in a Community College (CC)
3,600 enroll in the California State University system (CSU)
Only 400 enroll in the University of California system (UC)
CCs house more than half of undocumented students; however, there is no institutional support for them. Undocumented students remain invisible, in constant fear, and uncomfortable seeking help, as it can be difficult to identify potential allies to support them. Undocumented students at East Los Angeles College lack of a safe space where undocumented students can seek support, accurate and reliable information, and motivation to continue a healthy and successful academic experience in higher education. The lack of faculty knowledgeable about the issues undocumented students face results in incorrect and misleading information given to undocumented students. Most importantly, our hope is to improve the current campus climate that is uninformed and hostile.

Action Petitioned For;

We, Students for Equal Rights (S.E.R.)--the only undocumented support group in East Los Angeles College, the ELAC student body, and faculty are concerned, and We URGE President Marvin Martinez and his administration to stand up for undocumented students and to act on authorizing a resource center and SAFE centralized space. With the opening of this center, we envision to provide legal services, tutoring and motivational counseling, research opportunities on immigration issues, student retention programs, personal and professional development, Undocu Ally trainings for faculty and a food closet for all students. Ultimately, this will help to increase the transfer and graduation rates of undocumented students.
