Ryerson Community Supports the Safe Injection Site

We are members of the Ryerson community - students, faculty, staff and alumni - who want to express our support for the new safe injection site that has recently opened near our campus.
We know that this site will provide lifesaving health services for people in our community that use drugs. This is especially needed in the face of the devastating opioid crisis which has claimed far too many lives.
We also know that drug use carries stigma and that others in our community may fear having a site so close to where we study and work. We want to reassure everyone that study after study has shown that safe injection sites, and other harm reduction measures, make communities safer for everyone. Without these sites, people who use drugs are forced to do so in dangerous situations, without access to critical services like overdose prevention and without a safe way to dispose of paraphernalia. As more sites open, we expect fewer overdoses and a reduction in unsafely discarded needles. This site benefits us all whether we use drugs or not.
We encourage everyone in the Ryerson community to learn more about safe injection sites, harm reduction and the opioid crisis. It is vital that we all speak up when we witness the stigmatization and dehumanization of people who use drugs. We also know that we do not need increased surveillance and police patrols which will target the most vulnerable and massively limit the benefits of the site. Together as a community, we can fight this stigma and save the lives of our friends, family and neighbours who use drugs.
