Alison Billings started this petition to Ryerson University

Ryerson University is named after Egerton Ryerson, a prominent contributor to the Canadian public school system. He was also responsible for many of the ideas that resulted in the formation of Canada’s Residential School System.

Ryerson's recommendations for Aboriginal schools were appended to the first publication in 1898 of "Statistics Respecting Residential Schools" since the Indian Act (1876); "Agriculture being the chief interest, and probably the most suitable employment of the civilized Indians, I think the great object of industrial schools should be to fit the pupils for becoming working farmers and agricultural labourers, fortified of course by Christian principles, feelings and habits."

Ryerson argued that “Indians” should be educated in separate, denominational, English-only, boarding schools; the framework for the residential school system. In 2018 a plaque was erected at Ryerson University acknowledging and condemning Ryerson’s contributions to the residential school system and affirming the university's commitment to truth and reconciliation. In 2021 I do not believe that a plaque is a sufficient response to genocide.

I am asking you to join me in raising our voices for those who no longer can.
