Say 'no' to a superstore in Malton!

We are asking the members of the Ryedale District Council Planning Committee to vote to deny the planning application made by GMI Holbeck to develop a superstore on the site of the Wentworth Street Car Park (WSCP) in Malton.
Over two years ago, Ryedale District Council approved a plan to develop a superstore on the car park site. At the same time, they rejected proposals for a retail development on the site of Malton’s livestock market.
This decision was overturned by the independent Planning Inspectorate, who found that the superstore would draw business away from the town centre, and was likely to kill off the planned redevelopment of the livestock market.
Now, the same developers are back with basically the same proposal. Once again, they want to develop a superstore on the site of Wentworth Street Car Park, which could kill off our town centre and stop the crucial redevelopment of the livestock market.
The proposal was wrong in 2012, and it is wrong now. We simply do not need, and do not want, a superstore in Malton.
Last time, the planning committee ignored the wishes of Malton’s residents and businesses. It made a bad decision that ended up costing the council time and money to defend, and which the Planning Inspectorate ultimately rejected. We are asking the Planning Committee to learn from these mistakes and not repeat them, for the good of Malton and for the taxpayers of Ryedale.
