Moosehead Brewing has been in business since 1867 and most commonly recognized by their green bottled Moosehead Lager. Over the course of many years Moosehead Brewing has systematically attacked other breweries and businesses claiming they are infringing on trademark laws and that the term "Moose" cannot be used by any other businesses. Most recently Mooselick Brewing Co. out of Troy NH was attacked and now must re-brand its products, likely including their Double IPA "Atmoosephere".
I find it vile and obtuse that a large family owned brewery from Canada can lay claim to a word derived from Algonquin languages to describe a large mammal and distant relative of the deer family. In doing so they are allowed to systematically impact and or destroy any competition. These are not isolated incidents and Yosemite is facing similar branding issues. While I respect branding laws, companies should not be able to claim such general words such as moose or the likenesses of moose. The breweries had distinctly different styles, wording, and moose likenesses. Moose are a significant part of the tourism industry in New England states, as is craft brewing.
I propose a three tier plan and I anticipate it will be very challenging to complete phase three.
1.) Start the process by boycotting all Moosehead Brewing products sales in our local stores and bars. Lets show them we mean business by impacting their bottom line.
2.) With enough support I will approach the Maine Beer and Wine Distributors Association with my plan to remove their products from the shelves and replace them with locally crafted beers.
3.) I will work with trademark attorneys to reform and restructure the branding and trademark process to help limit the current scope.
