Valky Duran started this petition to Rutherford NJ Borough Mayor & Council and

The signatories, residents of the Borough of Rutherford, NJ would like to encourage our fellow borough residents and our local government to use evidence, facts, and reason when calling for action or crafting legislation.

Recognizing that civic engagement is both our right and our duty, we encourage our fellow residents that when presenting grievances or requesting local government action use the best possible evidence and arguments. Emotions are of course a necessary part of our humanity and individual experience is important to each of us.  Furthermore, emotions can in some cases convey a point in a clear and concise manner. However, emotion and anecdote are not sufficient to request changes that might affect all of our fellow Borough residents. It is indispensable that we use systematic compilation of data. How prevalent is an issue? Are there differences between the perception of the issue and the actuality of it? What records already exist that can help make a decision?

We also encourage our local government: Borough Council and Mayor, as well as all departments of the Borough, to use the best possible evidence, as well as reason and logic, when making decisions that will affect all of the Borough’s residents. When creating new ordinances, modifying existing ones, or eliminating existing ordinances, it is important to consider what can be backed up by evidence and not act based on fear, ignorance, or in a reactionary way.

Caution and thoughtfulness are allies when making decisions that affect others. Mistakes will always be made and we should learn from them. Using data and evidence will likely make for better decisions for all.
