Bring Back the Pierrepont/Union Bus
Bring Back the Pierrepont/Union Bus
Why this petition matters
The Rutherford Superintendent of Schools announced that the Subscription/ Courtesy Bus between Pierrepont and Union Schools would no longer be offered. This is a hardship on working parents who rely on the bus to provide safe transportation across town for their children. Rutherford is not practically a walkable town for school children between Pierrepont and Union through the seasons that school is in session. The alternatives to these children walking more than a mile through town on their own are costly before and after care services, which do not provide children the opportunity to participate in sports, play dates, etc. that might be more near their home. On Google Maps the walking distance between Pierrepont and Union is 1.5 miles and 31 minutes. For those of us who live farther, our children are walking just under the 2 miles, after which the service would not be optional. Given the distance falls right below the requirement, the decision to cancel seems unfair and unjust. The Superintendent says it is because of social distancing. But these rules have been relaxed most recently all around us as schools expect to return to capacity in September. The Superintendent says it is because of the construction around the school. But there are at least three other sides around the school to choose from and certainly other options to consider. Therefore, the argument to suspend the subscription/ courtesy bus seems unfair and unjust to working parents and children that need the service. Please join me in asking the Rutherford Superintendent, Administrators and Board to reconsider their decision in light of the negative impact on the many working families who make up our community, which they might not have fully considered when they made this decision.
