Keep The Rutgers Rock Wall Open

Located in the historic College Avenue Gym, the Rutgers Rock Wall has been a staple of Rutgers University since its construction in 1996. It has served and continues to serve as a hub for both Rutgers affiliates and the greater community to participate in the sport of rock climbing, and it has introduced countless alumni to the sport. Currently, it also serves as the practice location for the Rutgers Climbing Team, 3rd Place finishers at the 2014 Northeast Regional Championships.
Currently, Rutgers Recreation and Rutgers Athletics are considering the option of closing the Rock Wall permanently to convert the area into a practice space for another sports team. There is no concrete plan to build an additional climbing facility in any specific timeline, meaning that if the Rock Wall were to be eliminated, Rutgers University would lose the valuable climbing community that it has been building for nearly twenty years.
The climbing community has a strong presence on campus - attendance at the Rock Wall hovers between 20 and 50 visitors per day, and the Rutgers Climbing Team is currently 60 members strong. Additionally, the Wall offers belay classes, hosts events for student groups, hosts birthday parties and classes for central Jersey youth, and consistently holds large, highly successful events open to the entire Rutgers community (such as the Knight Climb, Gear Swap, and semesterly bouldering). Most importantly, the Rock Wall is highly accessible to all students - in addition to being completely free to Rutgers affiliates, gear and belays are also provided free of charge to newcomers. For anyone that has not yet visited the Rock Wall - all you need to do is stop by during any of our open hours! (Our open hours are MW 6-10 pm, T 4-10pm, TH 7-10 pm, SUN 5-8 pm).
The Rutgers Rock Wall is not ready to go away - we want to preserve the rock climbing community of Rutgers University, and so we want to keep the Rock Wall open.
