As Rutgers MSW students in the class of 2020, we are writing to express our grief about our graduation commencement being held online. Due to COVID-19, our last semester of grad school has been taken away from us. We are unable to attend in-person classes, our internships abruptly ended, and commencement was cancelled.

The solution that Rutgers School of Social Work has come up with is to hold a graduation commencement online. The class of 2020 have been through so much and now we will not be able to properly celebrate this special day. Earning a master’s degree is such a major accomplishment and it should be celebrated properly.

We will not be able to reunite with our peers that are in our program, which we have formed great relationships with over the course of this program. We were never able to properly say good-bye to our peers and our professors. We will not be able to be joined by our friends and family. A lot of us are the first members of our families who are going to be receiving a master’s degree.

Graduation is something that we all have been looking forward to since the moment we began this program. It is one of the most important milestones of our life that we will not be able to have. After everything that we’ve endured due to COVID-19, we deserve a ceremony to honor us and our accomplishments. It would mean the world to my peers and I if we can move convocation to another part of the summer. Other schools have moved their commencement to July or another part of the summer and it’s only fair if we are given the same opportunity.
