Dear Rutgers University,
The state government of New Jersey has declared a state of emergency, and over 100 cases of the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in the tri-state area. There is also one confirmed case in Cherry Hill Camden County. We urge Rutgers University all campuses(New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden)  to close down all campuses and allow students to take the remaining classes only remotely.
From research and observations of cases in other countries (mostly from China), we know that the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) can be transmitted at an extremely rapid speed and that all that is required is that a person comes into physical contact with a virus carrier (either symptomatic or asymptomatic) for less than 15 seconds in order to be infected with the virus. Over 50% of Rutgers students commute from various locations in New Jersey every day, and there are 11 proven cases in this state. Additionally, the incubation period ranges from 4-14 days, and the virus carrier can still infect others even if that person remains asymptomatic. Rutgers buses and lecture halls are closed and crowded environments which are the perfect breeding grounds for the virus. Considering all of this, Rutgers Unversity is extremely vulnerable to the virus.
As a result, we ask Rutgers University all campuses (New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden)  to close down all campuses to avoid spreading the virus and allowing it to have any more chance to infect anyone on campus.
In the meantime, we also ask all Rutgers students to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly and to avoid large crowds. If it is unavoidable to be in large crowds, we recommend wearing a mask, though currently, purchasing masks is extremely difficult and their efficacy is uncertain.

It is also extremely important to remember that the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) is extremely contagious, and it has infected over 100,000 people with a reported death rate of over 3%. Many countries such as China and Italy are under strict quarantine, and even the effect of quarantine is not guaranteed to contain it. Ira Longini, an adviser to the World Health Organization who tracked studies of the virus’s transmissibility in China. His estimate implies that there could eventually be billions more infections.
