We were just detained as we tried to deliver 400K signatures supporting gay men in Chechnya
May 11, 2017 — Dear friends,
We have urgent and important news! Today we were going to deliver all of the nearly 400.000 signatures we’ve collected together to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Moscow. We intended to demand a full-scale investigation of the cases of tortures and murders of LGBT people in Chechnya. The delivery was scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. and was organised together with the Russian LGBT Network.
Unfortunately, had we barely left the car with all the boxes, we got immediately detained by the police!
We are writing this update for you from a police van in which we are being kept. They are planning on taking us to the Tverskoy police station. Here’s a picture from inside a Russian police vehicle, used for transporting prisoners.
Dear friends, we are immensely grateful for your support and will keep you updated. Now, we are asking you to spread the information about our arrest as wide as you can! Please, use your social networks or communicate this info to journalists you know. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
We are nearly 400.000 — this is a huge power to be reckoned with! Let’s show what it’s capable of!
Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts,
Nikita Safronov, Alexandra Alekseyeva, Marina Dedales, Yury Guaiana and Valentina Dekhtyarenko
