Why this petition matters

Russell Sage College has decided that 2021 spring graduates will not be able to have guests attend the commencement ceremony.  Family and friends who wish to watch graduation must do so through live broadcast.  Commencement guidelines state that graduates will be separated by major, and as a biology major, there are only a few dozen graduates in my field at a small private school.  Larger institutions, such as University at Buffalo and University of Connecticut, have made accommodations for their 10,000-12,000 graduates to have a full, live commencement ceremony.  Each graduate at these large institutions are allowed 2 guests, and the ceremony will be held outside while socially distanced.  Additionally, beginning April 2nd, Sage athletics will allow between 100 and 200 fans per contest with 2 guests per athlete.  If other larger institutions and the athletics department at Sage can allow guests at larger gatherings, it is truly unfair that 2021 graduates must graduate with their loved ones absent at the ceremony.  This petition serves to push Russell Sage College to reconsider their plans for Spring 2021 commencement.  I urge the institution to give thought to the examples provided above to recognize the possibility of an outdoor graduation that permits 2 guests per graduate while maintaining safe distancing.
