The Ruapehu District Council must stop any plans to demolish the Taumarunui War Memorial Hall. The Hall was built by funds raised by the community, the land it sits on was taken from the Ngati Hauaroa people and the community of Taumarunui oppose the Council plans to demolish the Hall.

We see a more favourable option for the Hall and  are clear on 5 matters:

  1. the Taumarunui War Memorial Hall is regarded as a signaficant site for Taumarunui, Aotearoa and those that gave their lives for our country;
  2. the Hall preserved and protected for the people of today and tomorrow;
  3. the land is returned to Ngati Hauaroa ki Taumarunui Trust;
  4. the Hall will be for iwi of Ngati Hauaroa and all people of Taumarunui to enjoy;
  5. the funds allocated to the demolition and the funds set aside by RDC to maintain the Hall are given to the Trust to manage.

All plans to the demolition must cease immediately.
