Andree Falconer started this petition to Rt Hon Robert Jenrick, Secretary of state for Housing, Communities and Local Government

Thousands of university students sent home and now in lockdown are trying to complete their degrees on line and are currently facing uncertainty in every aspect of their lives due to Covid-19.

Although students in most halls of residence at uni or accommodation owned by Unite or Liberty Housing have already been released from liability to pay Summer Term rent BUT students with fixed term rental contracts for student houses, without break clauses however are being threatened with Court Action by private landlords and lettings agents if they don't keep paying their rent and bills until August in many cases, representing approx. £8000 rent to pay for empty houses!

The Government has promised do do "whatever it takes" to protect EVERYONE from being penalised for going home and staying at home to protect the NHS and SAVE LIVES.

In order to TREAT ALLL STUDENTS EQUALLY and TO STOP THESE STUDENTS BEING PENALISED FOR STAYING AT HOME TO SAVE LIVES, the Government therefore now needs to ACT URGENTLY to evoke emergency legislation to order ALL PRIVATE LANDLORDS TO IMMEDIATELY RELEASE ALL STUDENTS AT HOME FROM THEIR FIXED TERM CONTRACTS SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO PAY RENT OR BILLS FOR THE SUMMER TERM!

IF you are a student, a parent or a good citizen wanting the Government to protect students and their families in these extra ordinary times, please sign this petition. Thank you.
