Encourage RT. Hon. Oliver Dowden to save The Plaza Cinema and other independent cinemas.

My name is Kieran Mahoney and I am a dedicated volunteer at the Plaza Cinema in Waterloo, Liverpool.

I greatly admire Janet Dunn, head of trustees and the team at The Plaza for their work as this cinema was saved from closure by the efforts of the community 25 years ago, and during this time it has been a constant struggle to remain open. But with incredible support from the community over the last ten years it has been commercially successful without any outside subsidy or support.

The Plaza is a much loved community resource offering film screenings at affordable prices as well as special screenings to meet the needs of diverse audiences.

During this time the Plaza has received the following awards:

BAFTA ‘For the Love of Film’ Award, 2020
Janet Dunn, Chair of Trustees received a BEM for 25 years service to the community, 2019
Christine Physick received the International Moving Image Society/ Lady Doris & Sir Sydney Samuelson Award for making film accessible to people with disabilities, 2018
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, 2016

Due to the impact of Covid-19 the cinema is facing financial ruin.

We are asking the Secretary of State the Rt. Hon. Oliver Dowden MP to review the way the Recovery Fund is being administered by the BFI. We ask for a fairer distribution of the cash. As it stands the criteria will exclude most of the smaller independent cinemas including the Plaza, who rely solely on ticket income in favour of the larger Arthouse Cinemas that are already heavily subsidised by government.
