Ripon Residents started this petition to Rt Hon Julian Smith MP (Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Skipton and Ripon) and

The aim of this petition is to gauge the number of residents that are opposed to the redevelopment proposal of Ripon Barracks, a development that will see 1300 new houses built in our city.

The brochure states that it may look like this - http://riponbarracks.hyas.co.uk/assets/images/pdf/210.pdf

The opportunities for the public to speak up regarding this development have all been at very short notice and short on time. This is no doubt a strategy to allow this application to be hurried through and approved. This has resulted in a very low number of residents feeding back their views on the development.

The public engagement process carried out by Homes England in June 2019, only received 188 responses from Ripon residents. This is simply not enough for a development of this size, taking into account that Ripon has a population in excess of 16,000.

If you live in Ripon then this development will effect you, regardless of your proximity to the proposed development.

This is not a "not in my back yard" response, and it is not our aim to prevent the development of our City. This is a response born out of the clear disregard for the many negative ways in which this will impact Ripon and it's residents.

It simply does not make sense to build on this scale at the proposed location.

  • Traffic - congestion/air quality/safety
  • Clotherholme Road's traffic is dangerous at peak times with 2 secondary schools and the drive to the gates mentality of many parents and sixth formers.
  • Other traffic hot spots around Ripon will become worse than they already are.
  • No plans for additional secondary school.
  • Only 30% is affordable housing.
  • Local services cannot meet demand.
  • The location is not at all suitable - there are no link roads and they will not be building any.
  • The developer has admitted that it will cost too much to build link roads (it will hit their profit) and that our roads cannot be widened because we have "limited road space". They are correct so why build? See - http://riponbarracks.hyas.co.uk/assets/images/pdf/28.pdf
  • Proposed bus and cycle routes will not stop people using cars.
  • Over 10 years of construction traffic.
  • Affects all Ripon residents.
  • Where is the demand for these houses and who can afford them?

The results of this petition will be sent to Harrogate Borough Council and the Rt Hon Julian Smith MP.

We encourage you to explore the proposals at the official site for the development at http://riponbarracks.hyas.co.uk
