Make the practice of adding service charges to restaurant bills illegal.

It is becoming increasingly more widespread for restaurant businesses, particularly corporately owned chains to add a service charge often labelled optional, discretionary or recommended. However, many people feel uncomfortable asking for this to be removed or many do not even realise. Worst still is the aggravation and embarrassment caused when asking for this to be removed or attempting to pay the bill less this amount that has been added on. In one example, the restaurant manager of a large well-known chain threatened to call the police when one person refused to pay the service charge. Service charges or tips should be given only for exceptional service not for routine service that you would expect. Tips paid especially by credit card are often retained by the business and not paid to the staff. This whole area is open to abuse and needs to be legislated.
