Parks play a central role to community life in the UK:

-  Encouraging health and well-being.

-  Providing safe places for children to play.

-  Promoting civic pride.

-  Supporting biodiversity.

-  Acting as a key resource for helping urban areas adapt to climate change.

There is an increasing evidence base which makes clear the importance of Parks and Green Spaces across a wide-range of agendas.

These are currently not considered holistically in policy terms.

More than 90% of residents in the UK use their local parks and green spaces - more than any other leisure service in the country, but currently UK parks and green spaces receive no statutory funding & they are under threat (NESTA: 2013; Heritage Lottery Fund: 2014).

There is a growing body of evidence which demonstrates the importance of Parks and Green Spaces for public health, community cohesion, perceptions of (and fear of) crime, environmental and many other benefits, but these are currently often included in policy 'silos' so the role of parks and green spaces in supporting improved outcomes across a wide-range of agendas is not formally acknowledged, nor supported with statutory funding nor policies that support their maintenance and management in the future.

We would like you to review this & consider providing statutory funding to enable local authorities to continue to provide good quality parks and green spaces for all UK residents.

This petition has grown out of the Bristol Parkhive project which is a collaboration between the University of the West of England, and Bristol Parks Forum - the umbrella organisation supporting community parks groups volunteers in the city.
