Sending Mums to prison

Mums are being sent to prison if their child fails to reach a certain attendance level at school. Mums are first taken to court and they can be fined and warned about further action that may be brought if the child still fails to reach the required attendance. They can then be taken back to court and they could be given a 3 month sentence in jail.  I know of at least one mum who desperately tries to get her 15 year old to school.  She is holding down a full time job trying her best to hold her family together.  One son has 100% attendance and the other just doesn't want to go.  He can refuse to get dressed in a morning, he can get on the bus to school and still not go in school and he has managed to get in school and then bunked off. As he is bigger than his mum she cannot physically drag him to school which seems to be what the school expect.

The point is would it not be better to work with this mum to sort out the childs attendance rather than use the option of sending her to prison where the boys will have to be sent into care, she may lose her job and she will certainly lose her house.  If this is happening with one mum it is happening with more. These mums need help to get control not prison where the family is more likely to fragment and break. I am asking you to sign a petition to get help and justice for these mums who struggle trying to do everything they can for their families and yet still seem to get punished.  They need help not punishment. A failing attendance level should automatically trigger help not threats.
