This and the 70th Anniversary of VJ Day in August next year are the last major anniversaries when veterans and those who also served will be with us in some numbers. It is essential that we take the opportunity to 'remember them' so that this and future generations will better understand the sacrifice, bravery and sense of duty of our 'finest generation' in order that we may be free.
The Government, having spent £50 million on commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of WW1, failed to spend a penny on any centrally organised commemorations of D-Day at the time of the 70th Anniversary in June (thank goodness for the French and the BBC) and it will be a serious dereliction of duty if they fail to give the VE Day anniversary - at the least as significant as the WW1 anniversary - the consideration it merits and deserves.
I realise May 8th, 2015 is the day after the election, but just imagine an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty reminiscient of her presence - then Princess Elizabeth - alongside her mother and father and Winston Churchill on May 8th, 1945. I'm sure a little creative thinking could make it happen.
