Amanda Burse started this petition to RSU 10 School Board

There is a currently a proposal going before the board to temporarily restructure the grades within Rumford Elementary School and Meroby Elementary School while the new school is being built to help with supposed larger class sizes. This proposal relocates students attending grades PreK through 2nd grade to Rumford Elementary and students attending grades 3 through 5 to Meroby Elementary and will cause a disruptive separation of students and staff and constant moving of students between buildings.

Consistency, predictability, and cohesiveness among staff is key in educating our children and with mapping an effective, clear progression in scholarly accomplishments, along with key social skills that will later make all that learning come together. When our kids change entire schools, the entire staff also changes. When our kids change schools, their peer group changes. When our kids change schools, the atmosphere of learning changes. The superintendent has said that restructuring the elementary schools this way will make the transition to middle school easier, but some students could change schools up to 4 different times in as many years.

This plan does not address the affect, psychologically or educationally, on an at risk child who is already struggling or children who have little or no support at home. Constant changes for a child like this are detrimental. Very often, these are kids who do not easily form bonds or trust with adults, making learning already, an uphill battle. Having a united and connected staff also results in quicker identification of issues caused by family hardships. These are issues plague our community, and we can’t close our eyes to the long term damage these chances could cause. To date, the superintendent has not presented the public, school board, or staff with any independent assessments or child impact studies done on the effects of mobility on the at risk child, and there are no transition plans in place.

The costs- financial costs, educational costs, and emotional costs have not been thoroughly investigated or planned for this very temporary restructuring.
