Angela Fellars Winn in Action started this petition to RPS205 Administration and

RPS205 released a survey requiring families choose either in-person school or remote learning for their children this fall. The survey was released on Wednesday, July 29 - the same day the district released their full plans for reopening. The district is requiring all families reply to the survey by Monday, August 3rd - a date which is only 3 business days from the release. If families don't respond, the district will automatically enroll their children into in-person learning but exclude them from access to school busses - leaving many without a way to get to school and without access to distance learning.

Three business days is not enough time to make a decision in normal circumstances, but in a time of crisis and uncertainty because of COVID, it's especially burdensome. Parents and caregivers still have a lot of questions. Many still don't have access to things like how many days a week their children would attend or even which days that might be. Information for special programs and special needs is vague. Many families don't even know about the survey or lack access to the internet.

We need time. We need time to navigate childcare, transportation, employment, and healthcare needs. Additionally, social services, childcare facilities, community partners, and faith organizations need time to create the support programs necessary for families to even know what their options and resources are.

People can only make good choices when they have information and good choices available. We need time to process the plan which has been released, identify what is necessary to make the best choices for our children, and research and find access to those items.

We must take the time needed to reopen our schools well. Doing this right is far more important than doing it fast. Please join me in asking that RPS205 extend the deadline for response until at least two more weeks (August 17th) so that our families and community can make the best choices for our children and communities.

Thank you,
