Melissa Yeager started this petition to RPS Northside parents and advocates

We are currently in a moment of profound opportunity, as Richmond School Board considers how best to bring integration and equity to our Northside schools. Northside Richmond is being addressed separately from the rest of our city for a good reason: pairing is our only way to create meaningful integration and equity. Linwood Holton Elementary School is just 1.1 miles from Ginter Park Elementary, and 2.4 miles from Barack Obama. Holton contains almost all of our neighborhood's white public school children, while Ginter Park and Barack Obama are almost entirely African-American. Pairing these schools, so that Ginter Park and Barack Obama serve K-2 and Holton serves 3-5, will bring all the benefits of integration to all three of our elementary schools, will draw resources to them, and will create a community that can move on to fill and energise our under-utilized middle and high schools, Thomas Henderson and John Marshall.

It is true that pairing costs money. There are logistical issues for many families too. We must not allow these factors to stand in the way of a historic chance to show radical love to our whole Northside. We have seen in recent weeks the astonishing energy, passion and love we have for our schools. We absolutely can turn that energy, passion and love to making pairing work.

All of the children of our Northside Community deserve great, amply resourced schools and the opportunities that come from attending them. All of our Northside children will benefit from ending segregation and moving forward into a bright new future. We must support pairing for One Northside!
