Keep meals on wheels running for the vulnerable and elderly

I am a volunteer for the Royal voluntary service, helping out at meals on wheels and in the lunch clubs. Meals on wheels is a service which delivers a hot, nutritious, 2-course meal to the homes of elderly and vulnerable individuals who often experience difficulty getting shopping and cooking their own meals. The majority of people we deliver to are elderly, aged 70-100 years old, and often struggle to leave their homes or are confined to their house. Many people we deliver to are lonely and often we may be the only person they have spoke to face-to-face, or at all, all week. This is why Meals on wheels is such an important service as the elderly are experiencing well-needed and sought after social contact, as well as a hot meal and a regular check to ensure they are safe and well. As from march the meals on wheels programme will be discontinued, instead these individuals will be expected to travel to a lunch club as no alternative has been put in place. The whole essence of meals on wheels is delivering the meal as people struggle or are unable to leave the house or even cook for themselves. I am absolutely outraged and very worried for the elderly that use this service as I believe many will genuinely struggle without meals on wheels.I believe it is incredibly important to take care of the older generation, making their quality of life better is what made me volunteer in the first place. Please, I am urging everyone to support me and sign this petition to encourage and support the continuation of meals on wheels for our elderly people as it is such a vital part of many of their lives.
