Philippa Lomas started this petition to Sally Harvey, CEO, Royal National Institute Of Blind People

as a totally blind parent to 2 sighted children, it's come to my attention that the RNIB  produce hardly anything that will help.
For instance they produce very little in the way of reading matter for blind and sighted to share, for example board books with braille in as well as print. This means we have to send for our books from America from companies such as Seedlings if we wish to buy books to read to our children which are the same as any other child would have. Yes, there are libraries where we can borrow books to read together, however this takes away the right to keep a particular favourite or even to give books as presents. We have the right to buy books we can read to our children at the same cost as sighted people would pick up a book in any online or highstreet shop and not be charged extra for the priveledge of having them made accessible, and to buy them in this country.
The games RNIB have for playing with young children are very limited. For example there are no picture snap cards with braille, no memory games such as pairs, and these types of things are what all children play.
They have no print letters with braille on to help us teatch our children.
They have very few kitchen aids such as braille measuring cups or braille measuring spoons, or talking bread makers etc.
And when we find products we like and wish to buy again, for example "Sock Locks" to help with the laundry, they discontinue them. this is frustrating to say the least!
these are just some examples of where RNIB’s range of products are lacking. having things available such as this would not only be helpful for us blind parents with sighted children, but for visually impaired children of sighted parents as well.
Why should we sit at home with family members labelling games and books so we can read or play them with our children, or ship products in from other countries just so our children can enjoy the same things as their friends? or so we can cook effectivly for example? why should we go without when they have the resources to adapt items to suit our access needs? why should we be doing it when it should be their task as "the Royal National Institute of Blind People"?
Please can we ask for new useful products to be added to your shelves, or failing that, can we ask that anything we send to you, be it book, game, toy etc, can be adapted by you to suit our individual access needs? Start working for us, rather than just existing,  give us the same rights as any other parent
