Why this petition matters

Started by Royal Holloway Skate Society

For years now the University and the security that operates on campus have not allowed skateboarding in any way, shape or form.

With the Skate Society itself having over 100 student members and being incredibly active in fundraising, events and communication, we believe a designated space is a step in the right direction.

Skateboarding’s induction as an olympic sport serves as a huge reminder that it should be treated the exact same as any other sport, such as tennis, football, rugby etc - all sports which the university provides designated areas for. At the moment, those who wish to participate are limited to dangerous car parks and streets due to the rules in place, quite unlike any other sport.

We are simply proposing that a space be introduced where the society and students interested in participating may exercise and practice the activity, this space would not have to be newly built but simply a small designated area of flat concrete.

Measures would be taken to keep it clean and no damage would come to such a designated area. The area would be a safe space, and the society would not operate anywhere else on campus as a result.

We would greatly appreciate any response or help.
