This union believes the Media Charter (Byelaw H) places unfair, immoral and potentially illegal limits on the reporting capabilities of its Student Media.
As a result, student media no longer has freedom of expression or press, something we've had enshrined since we started in 1985. The document effectively states "you have freedom of press, but you can't report/use it in these situations" - ???.
The new rules would have prevented Orbital and Insanity from reporting on incidents such as the Founders' fire in 2016. Many students used these places as their source of news during the incident, as there was no official communication from the University. Preventing the outlets from reporting in emergency situations would have prevented people from finding out important information about the incident.
We've written a motion to send to the Students' Union, to appear at the next general meeting, but we will only get a referendum on this issue if we get over 200 signatures. The full motion text is here.
Please only sign this petition if you're a current Royal Holloway student and member of the Students' Union.
(We are acting as students outraged at the SU's disregard for freedom of press, not as media outlet members)
