FINANCIAL REIMBURSEMENT OVER UCU STRIKE ACTION FROM RHUL
0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500!
As many students are aware, the UCU which represent many lecturers at Royal Holloway are planning to strike nationally due to pension cuts that can in some cases exceed £9,000 per year. As a result of this, planned strike action means that the following days, unless called off, are going to go ahead.
The current planned strike days are:
- Thursday 22nd February
- Friday 23rd February
- Monday 26th February
- Tuesday 27th February
- Wednesday 28th February
- Monday 5th March
- Tuesday 6th March
- Wednesday 7th March
- Thursday 8th March
- Monday 12th March
- Tuesday 13th March
- Wednesday 14th March
- Thursday 15th March
- Friday 16th March
If this is not cancelled, many students are likely to have lectures, seminars and office hours cancelled, as well as in class assessments such as presentations disrupted causing insecurity regarding exams. Although in my experience, most lecturers have been courteous in letting students know in advance, we are still paying the full amount of tuition despite a significant cut in the number of contact hours.
With the cost of tuition per year being in excess of £9,000, and the structure of universities being considerably more entrepreneurial, I believe that there should be an expectation that we are reimbursed for the lectures that are missed. At various levels, we are not being provided a service that the university is expected to uphold as a educational service provider. With certain higher members of staff being paid extortionate amounts in order to assure we get what we pay for, as well as ever increasing costs of education, it is not unjust to expect this reimbursement.
I, along with many other students, believe that this petition can be a driving force to enact refunds that are due for failure to provide service by the university.
Please sign this petition so this issue can be brought to the attention of Royal Holloway and Paul Layzell in order to be refunded for the amount that we are due to miss out on both financially and educationally.
