Tracey-Anne Phillips started this petition to Royal College of Nursing and

HCA’s working in all health professions in hospitals, community care and nursing homes require more protection in their roles. More and more is asked from them and the responsibilities they have are increasing. We need a national registration and qualification in order to recognise the importance of their role, accountability of their role and professional recognition for the work they do. It would create a higher standard of care. Without HCA’s the health industry would collapse and with community care becoming such a huge focus to stop bed blocking in our hospitals, it is vital that this role is given the recognition and the staff are protected in a professional capacity.

Currently there is no criteria to become a carer. Thus we hear of terrible abuse cases and the reputation of HCA’s is damaged. By introducing a register and a minimum criteria of entry into the role it would attract a wider selection of society to the role who would be better qualified. If standards are raised care would in turn be better. To be accountable to a professional body could only improve standards of care and ensure professional conduct at all times. Please support this petition.
