In 1584 Sir Walter Raleigh, of Hayes Barton, England was given a charter by Queen Elizabeth I to COLONIZE and rule any “Remote, heathen and barbarous lands, countries and territories, not actually possessed of any Christian Prince or inhabited by Christian People, “in return for one-fifth of all the gold and silver that might be mind there.”   It was through her financially support and royal decree that Sir Walter Raleigh could seize the land and its resources.

COLONIZATION:  The policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically.

While Sir Walter Raleigh never touched the shores of North America his legacy of piracy, robbery, theft and murder proceeded him.  Raleigh was known for his leadership in beheading over 600 people and introducing tobacco to England which nearly saved their economy.

That tobacco would further fuel the need for the first slaves to arrive in 1619 where Africans began its 400 year quest for freedom.

Prior to his expedition, Christopher Columbus would arrive some 277 years earlier, exterminating over 130,000 natives from the land.

Today in 2020 and over 400 years later very few Natives Americans exist and blacks are still oppressed economically, physically, and psychologically from the residue of Post Colonization.  Sir Walter Raleigh is no gent.  His conquest would come some 300 years before the Confederates fought to keep their slaves.  While Raleigh’s legacy would start with the very few remaining Native Americans left it would begin the exploitation of slavery, savagery, theft, rape and murder which has now morphed into mass incarceration, gerrymandering, crack cocaine, fostercare (sold children), plantation style homes in the inner city and an education full of lies. We cannot afford his legacy, for many have died behind the sale and use of poisoned tobacco.  Those who own tobacco companies are protected with immunity under the Master’s Settlement Agreement and have made no effort to repay the descendants while killing on average 480,000 a year according to the CDC.

The name Sir Raleigh Walter brands our city with a stained legacy. A legacy we cannot afford.  While even today the City of Raleigh only offers what is Affordable to those whom they actually owe vs. stopping their Post Colonial War on the Poor.  The heirs to his conquest have tripled in wealth and expanded while the victims of enslavement are pushed out, forced out, shut out and even incarcerated.

The City of Raleigh has shown its zero tolerance against predatory behaviors.  We now petition them to remove the statue of Sir Walter Raleigh: The Father of Piracy, Looting, Theft, Rioting, Colonization and Predatory Concepts.
