Keep the Citizens of Rowlett informed by leaving channels in the clear!

Rowlett will soon be moving from an analog to digital radio system, and will be fully encrypted, meaning nobody will be able to listen in on police/fire radio traffic.

The media, local crime watch, and scanner pages that work very hard to keep the community informed, will be left with silent scanners and the community is left in the dark.

By allowing citizens to listen and monitor radio traffic, it's giving law enforcement additional eyes and ears to help them catch criminals, missing persons, etc.

While we understand a lot of it has to do with officer safety, there is no evidence we have found that shows encrypting regular police radio traffic has or will actually improve their safety.

That's why we would like to gain access to regular, day to day operations to keep the community aware and we will support Rowlett in keeping tactical or special investigations encrypted.

By electronically signing this petition, you are helping yourself, as well as your fellow neighbors in Rowlett by letting us keep you informed of things going on in the City of Rowlett.

During the tornado, we had no idea what was going on. I turned on my radio, and the Rowlett / Sachse Scanner began posting updates on where the tornado was, and which areas were impacted, so people can move out of the way of the tornado.

Take a step back and imagine the impact that tornado would've had if those 35,000 followers didn't know of it.. We'll leave it at that..
