On December 5, 2019, a student at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ reportedly "fell" off of the parking garage on Rowan Boulevard. President Ali Houshmand made a Facebook statement about the events, and then goes on to speak of mental health on campus. He writes:

"Earlier today we shared the sad news of a male student’s fall from the parking garage on Rowan Boulevard near Barnes & Noble. As of this writing, he remains in critical condition and I join the University community in deepest concern for him, as well as those affected by this tragedy.

This evening at 7 p.m., the Wellness Center will host a gathering in Chamberlain Student Center, Room 221, to provide support and resources for coping near the end of a semester in which we have suffered more losses than ever before.

On Monday at 7 p.m. in the Chamberlain Student Center Eynon Ballroom, the regularly scheduled Student Government Association meeting will be devoted to bringing the broader University community together to discuss what has been a national crisis, now touching our community.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please go to the Wellness Center and ask to speak with a counselor or call the Wellness Center at 856-256-4333 (on the main campus call 64333). Counselors can be reached 24 hours a day at 856-256-4922.

Rowan’s commitment to student wellbeing can be seen in many initiatives and services, but we must strive to draw together as a university family in times of crisis and respond with compassion for those around us.

Sincerely,
Ali A. Houshmand
President"

Campus suicide rates at Rowan University's Glassboro Campus are at their highest. It's time we call upon President Dr. Ali Houshmand and the rest of Rowan University to put their funding into better resources for students suffering from Mental Illness and suicidal thoughts.

The current average wait time for a one-on-one appointment is over 3 months, though the University says it no longer has waiting lists. Students cannot see campus counselors in the time that they need, even when they express immediate crisis.

Rowan University needs to put its funding into an expansion of Winans Hall and the hiring of more mental health counselors for its students.

GROUP THERAPY IS NOT ENOUGH!

At what number of deaths does Rowan University plan to change?

According to statistics, approximately 1,100 college students commit suicide every year. This makes suicide the second-leading cause of death among college students. That's 1,100 students too many. Is that when the university will decide to step up and make the necessary changes to save our students and my peers?

By expanding on the Wellness Center and hiring more counselors, Rowan University can greatly reduce it's wait list of students in need which will in turn reduce the rates of suicide. Group therapy is not enough. Students need one-on-one counseling because group therapy is not anonymous.

Please join me in signing this petition to push Rowan University to step up their resources and start making a change.
