Why this petition matters

There is a four way stop by a power sub station and children's daycare at the corner of Bonin Rd. and La Neuville Rd. in Lafayette, Louisiana. The recent and rapid spike of population in both Broussard and Youngsville have caused this intersection to be a major traffic jam, especially in the 4:30 PM-5:30 PM hours on weekdays; mostly caused by commuters on their way home. A mere 200 yard stretch of road before the intersection can turn into a 30 minute wait in traffic alone. In that same amount of time it takes to move 200 yards, someone could drive 17 miles to New Iberia. With the ever increasing population of outlying cities like Youngsville and Broussard, this intersection is quickly becoming a major intersection for most commuters, and a four way stop will not do the job. The major traffic jam is mostly coming from the Bonin Rd. side of the intersection; the line on the Bonin Rd. side could stretch 1/4 mile back, while the La Neuville side could be 10 cars long. This exact scenario, where a majority of traffic comes from one end, would be an ideal candidate for a roundabout and or traffic circle. This would let the flow continue almost uninterrupted from the congested side, (Bonin Rd.), while still letting through the occasional traveler from the intersecting roads. There are two potential blockers of this project. One would be the electricity sub station on the south west corner, and the major power poles surrounding. The others are the properties near the intersection. One of the properties is where a house used to be that is now demolished and a new building is currently being built. However, directly across the street to the east is an empty field that the roundabout could be pushed more towards as to not interfere with the new building on the west side. The issue in that case would be the land owners only. The local government and planning officials would have to reach out to the land owners. The land owners would have agree to let the city buy it from them. The land owners are as listed: Mary Margaret Bell (Patin), Rita Ann Bell, Marie Theresa Bell, Monica Lynn Bell. The properties original land owner passed the land down in the late 90's, and the land has been untouched since. I am hoping the current land owners that I listed above will be willing to cooperate with the city, especially since there is no structure built on the property, nor has the property been occupied for over 25 years. In theory, La Neuville Rd. could be changed to slightly curve North, around the sides of the major electrical poles, (and put some form of heavy duty median barriers with directional reflective arrows preventing a collision into a power pole). If done right, it would be a very slight curve, starting further back on La Neuville Rd. from both ends as to avoid a sharp 90 as seen nearby on Bonin Rd., that would eventually lead to a medium to small sized roundabout and or "traffic circle" whose northern outlet would start roughly 190 ft. north of the center of the current four way stop. The Northern most outlet of the traffic circle could start right after the driveway of 1004 Bonin Rd. I even have a rough layout of how it can be done, (push the layout further east towards the field in your imagination). The city has also already been granted covid 19 relief funds to do things like road repair and drainage improvement, and I'm hoping that this project can count towards that. If more funds are needed then a go fund me for this exact project could be discussed to cover a portion. We should hopefully get as many donations from frustrated citizens as amount of signatures this petition will hopefully receive; if advertised correctly. If a traffic circle is absolutely off the table, then at least make this intersection a three way stop only, from the east and west La Neuville sides, as well as the southern most Bonin Rd. side, leaving the northern Bonin Rd. outlet simply a yield. Please take this seriously, for the greater good of Lafayette commuters. Lafayette is already dying in growth in comparison to surrounding areas, the business sector is the only thing left pumping money into Lafayette, and if the commute is miserable, that sector will die off as people look for closer jobs as a means to stop the dreaded commute. Thank you.
