Dear Round Rock ISD,

Eid Al-Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in Islam, and is observed once yearly after the Islamic month of Ramadan. Muslims all over the globe come together to pray and spend time together. They share gratitude within each other and towards the community through donations and service. And with Islam coming to be the 2nd largest religion in the United States, making up more than 1.4 million people, it is growing more and more important to help cater to the needs of worshipping students to help them develop themselves and their identities.

However, Eid generally falls upon school days, and students are left to decide between missing important pieces of their education or important religious events. We recognize that the option of skipping school exists, but it does not account for the stress and turmoil of missing valuable information and having to catch up on that. There should not be any “consequence” in exercising the right to religious freedom. An excused absence cannot cover for the struggles young Muslim students have to deal with daily: the difficulties of school and their identities.

In today’s current situation, it is even harder for Muslims to connect with the meaning of this sacred holiday, having already lost the ability to cherish both Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha of 2020. Getting the day off from school work would allow for them to spend more time with their families and with their religion. Having to adapt to online learning has been stressful enough, but losing everything that is important to you and still having to handle the difficulties of school is even worse.

We are not the first petitioners to wish for religious equality towards all students, nor the first to specifically ask for the day of Eid to be observed as a school holiday. But, we do ask that Round Rock ISD give students the opportunity to live through the difficulty of this time and celebrate the sacred holiday of Eid Al-Fitr on May 13th, 2021.
