Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council: Stop the proposed pilot scheme for selective licencing

RMBC are proposing to implement a selective licencing scheme, initially in Eastwood Village, but potentially throughout the Rotherham Borough. This scheme will cost the landlords of rental properties up to £1000  per property every 5 years. The apparent purpose of the proposed scheme is to reduce anti-social behaviour by targeting areas where this is perceived to be a problem and penalising landlords of such properties. In reality this will stigmatise families, cause migration away from identified areas and cause an escalation of rental costs due to this additional financial burden. Some lenders, such as RBS Group will refuse to advance mortgages on properties in these areas due to the low yield and high risk. We consider that this scheme has not been well thought out and is primarily aimed at providing another easy revenue stream for the council, leaving landlords to shoulder both financial and social responsibility. It is also notable that Council properties are exempt from this scheme! Please sign this petition as a vote for common sense and to stop this nonsense now.
