Strengthen Roswell's Tree Ordinance & Better Protect Landmark Historic Trees

This petition had 455 supporters

In November of 2014, the owners of a home on Goulding Place in historic Roswell successfully applied for and cut down the old oak tree there dubbed Old Majestic, possibly the oldest of its type in Roswell.  The condeming arborist testified at a Mayor's meeting the tree had "punky" roots and posed a risk to residents, but an indepdent consulting arborist hired by neighbors opposed to the tree removal conducted two independent tests of the tree over a one year period of time and the technology scans and assessment showed no appreciable risk of failure. Nevertheless the city proceeded to condemn the tree, despite its findings of having a trunk that was more than 95% solid. The City of Atlanta wont even consider condemnation of specimens such as this unless scans show greater than 30% deterioration making Roswell's tree ordinance comparably weak realtive to other cities in Georgia.  When the tree was removed, just as the scan showed, the tree trunk at the base was absolutely rock solid.

This petition moved from one attempting to save this tree, to an ongoing petition for the City of Roswell to improve and strengthen its tree ordinance to make removal of large specimen trees more difficult; remove blatant conflicts of interest around tree condemnations and removal; and a call to establish and fund a City of Roswell landmark tree program to better care for and protect Roswell's oldest and most historic specimen trees.  This petition will remain alive until the basic goal of strengthening the tree ordinace is accomplished, regardless of how long this takes. Please share your support of this petition by sending it to your friends and neighbors in Roswell, and we will periodically update you on the effort to improve Roswell's ordinance.
