Dear Ross Valley School District Board of Trustees,

The many families, teachers and community members signing this petition are supportive of Ross Valley Charter School and want Ross Valley’s public school system to be the best it can be. We believe that bringing an additional public school option to the community through Ross Valley Charter School will benefit everyone.

We support our passionate and experienced public school teachers in their efforts to open an innovative, beloved and proven public school model that will serve even more children.

We now request the Ross Valley District school board make a facility available by working with these committed teachers and community members who pledge to work to find a solution that strengthens us all.

Many school district leaders across California are increasingly using public charter schools to help enhance their school systems. And these school districts follow California law by making facilities available.

The school district currently oversees available public school space, including one closed campus with vacant space, and other operating campuses with available classrooms. We encourage our school district leaders to follow state law and lead by example – through a spirit of dialogue and collaboration rather than through attorneys.

The District has options. We would like the District to consider the Red Hill campus, since it would give Ross Valley an entirely new public school on a campus that currently sits mostly vacant. This would eliminate disruption to our other schools and would allow Ross Valley Charter to educate all its students on one campus.

We are also open to sharing space on an existing public school campus, an option which can include the Manor and Brookside campuses, and we commit to fostering a positive environment where educators from different public schools can learn from one another.

By opening another public school in Ross Valley, we can encourage dozens of families who have left, or are considering leaving, for private schools, home schools, or other public schools, to return to, or remain at, our local public schools. When families leave our public school system they take away resources, and community energy they can contribute, energy that’s needed in our public schools.

We want a vibrant public school system. Our entire community will benefit when we open another valued school option and then work closely together so that all our students thrive. And the next step for making this happen is for the school district to make a facility available.
