Food waste is one of the biggest environmental crises we face in our time. 392 million acres of land have been taken over in the name of food production; 132 million acre-feet of water are used for irrigation (one acre-foot of water is the amount used for 2 households of four); 516 million pounds of pesticides are being used a year - all in the name of food production. With 30 to 50 percent of this hard-earned food being thrown out every single year, it is up to us, as citizens, to demand another way. 

This massive food waste is fueled by the need for cosmetically "perfect" produce. This standard is incredibly unrealistic and unnecessary. For my local chain of supermarkets here in Spokane, called Rosauers, I am asking for an "ugly" produce section to be set up. This way people have the option to buy this produce, rather than it being thrown away. This will benefit the shoppers as well as the environment and is a small step in the fight to eliminate food waste.
