Bring Back the RISD Spring and Holiday Alumni/Student Art Sales

In January 2017, RISD sent out an email to a few alumni announcing the cancellation of the beloved RISD Holiday and Spring Art Sales by proposing instead a website to take the place of these events.  This announcement comes as a complete surprise to all of us in the RISD family.

The following three paragraphs are from the original email sent by RISD:

RISD Alumni Relations is thrilled to announce that we are creating a new online directory for RISD makers from across the globe. The goal of this directory will be to promote the work of our alumni to a vast global audience. As envisioned, the directory will provide information on how to purchase alumni-produced work to interested buyers from around the world.

We plan to launch the directory in the summer of 2017, and there will be no charge to participate. This new marketplace will have the flexibility to promote and benefit RISD artists and designers who have not been able to participate in RISD-run sales because of location, transportation and insurance issues, and other factors. As part of the creation of the directory, we will phase out our Holiday Sale but will continue to strongly support RISD Craft during RISD Weekend.

More information on the directory will be available in the coming months. Until then, please let us know if you have any questions or thoughts. Thanks so much – we look forward to working with you on this exciting new initiative!

These vibrant sales have a nearly 20 year tradition of bringing the New England and RISD communities together to celebrate and support the arts.  The sales regularly attract design enthusiasts and gallery owners from all over the country and provide an exceptional platform for alumni & students to showcase their collections to the public.

Senator Reed recently mentioned at a town hall meeting that it’s important to champion and advance the arts, especially in these tenuous times when support for the arts by those in power is in jeopardy. The sales provide economic benefits not only to RISD alumni & students, but also to the restaurants and many small businesses of Rhode Island's Creative Capital.

These sales are a unique catalyst in strengthening the social fabric of our community -- people forge lasting relationships and make valuable design-related connections.  While the new website is a welcome addition, it should not be used as a substitute.  Social interaction with artists and their works is a crucial part of the creative process and art experience.  Art happens here!

The RISD Holiday & Spring Art Sales are vital; they need to remain.

Art inspires. Art connects. ART MATTERS.
