Why this petition matters

Started by Bethany Kaiser

I am writing this email to address the situations that have been occurring that need attention.

These issues include safety risks, lack of transparency and communication, along with the constant breaks. I understand covid has been unexpected, but the way that ROP has handled our scheduling and curriculum is unacceptable.

This break now pushes us out until at least the end of May, when our projected graduation date was November 12. Breaks have been sprung on students last minute, days after faculty was made aware. In the beginning of the program, we started with four clinical sites. We have now gone from four sites to none, to one back down to none. We have been told numerous times that ROP is working on other sites, yet we are taking another month long break. From what I understand, there is an administration whose job it is to ensure that we have sites to continue our schooling. Again, I understand that covid has been unexpected but I believe our class has been completely mishandled and misled. We were also promised for our VN program to end in December, January, March and April. Now again we are being pushed into May possibly June. As a class we have gone through numerous faculty and admin changes. We have had 3 different DONs, teachers leave, teachers be added to staff. This inconsistency and lack of stability for students makes schooling difficult. We have had to adapt to different teaching styles for both lecture and clinical making it hard to succeed in addition to all of the other issues.

At the clinical site, we were not supplied with adequate PPE. KN95 and facemasks should be one time use. Not multiple. Bringing these items out of the site and into our home further puts us and our families at risk. At the site as well, the nurses have been going to the covid unit in no PPE and coming back to interact with students. The covid unit also has a zippered wall which is left open quite often leaving no divide between the side we were working on and the covid unit. Students were also pressured into going into isolation rooms, again without proper PPE. I understand that we were at a clinical site that has active covid but we were told we would be kept as safe as possible.

The price was raised from $15,000 and $16,500. The class was promised a new classroom and brand new lab. Our lab has not been updated nor have we been able to use our classroom as promised. We got sent home from school on March 13 and did not receive kits to practice skills until May 20. We previously asked for tuition discounts and were denied. I and numerous other students strongly feel that a financial reimbursement needs to be considered due to a lack of services not received. These were promises made to us, over and over, yet we are paying the price for them. Most students have had to work part time and continue strenuous scheduling to accommodate an extended program. Other students had job opportunities for after the program which they have now missed out on because of this program's continued extension.
