The COVID-19 pandemic has uprooted much of the globe and has significantly changed all of our livelihoods. We, as students, have suffered the brunt of this global crisis. Some of us have been displaced. In a matter of days, many of us have packed up our dorms and moved back home. Students have lost their form of income and are unsure about their financial stability. This can lead to food (and other essentials) insecurity. Students have also become responsible for the health and wellness of their household, including taking care of vulnerable individuals (like the elderly and immunocompromised). Some students are currently stuck abroad having left their belongings (including their textbooks and class materials) behind.
Due to these high-stress, life-altering circumstances, we, the student body, petition for a pass/fail grading system to be implemented for the 2020 Spring semester. This is not a foreign grading system. Other universities in the country have already adopted this system such as but not limited to, Notre Dame University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgetown University, Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, the University of California Berkeley as well as Yale, Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia Law Schools.
We have appreciated the efforts taken thus far to accommodate students during this frightening time, however, we strongly believe it is in the best interest of the University’s students as well as the faculty to convert to this grading system. The pass/fail grading criteria will kindle the desire to learn as it would relieve some of the stress students are experiencing.
